A local tsunami capable of adding 2 feet to the otherwise expected wave height of 2’-4’ may hit OC at 12:10 this afternoon. The tsunami waves should reach LaJolla at 12:02 and Santa Barbara by 12:31.
The 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Chile was larger than the 7.8 that hit San Francisco in 1906 and is the sixth largest recorded since 1900. Considering that a one digit incrase on the Richter scale means ten times more power, the quake in Chile must have been extraordinary.
I have a friend on a South American cruise ship currently 900 miles south of the quake who texted “The captain is concerned about a tsunami.”
Local beaches are reported to be hazardous to swimers but I might head down to Laguna Beach at noon to take some photos and check out this wild weather we’re having.
